Jacques Piccard’s was a Swiss engineer and oceanographer. He was known for developing submarines for studying ocean currents. In 1960 he and Lt. Don Walsh were able to use his submarine, the Trieste, to reach the floor of the Mariana Trench. It took them five hours to reach to reach the depth of 35,797 feet. The voyage was without incident until they reach 30,000 feet where they heard a loud crack. They continued to descend and reach the bottom which they described as “snuff-colored ooze”. When they reached the ocean floor they observed a flatfish and a new type of shrimp. With 17,000 PSI pressure at this depth marine biologist disputed their observations. Shortly after reaching the bottom of the ocean they discovered cracks in the viewing window. They immediately began ascending. With the damaged vessel they were able to return to their ship without incident in three hours and 15 minutes. This historic event received worldwide coverage and was one of mankind's greatest feats of engineering. The Piccard Damascus steel blade has an almost submarine like appearance and the chrome bolster made naming this knife a simple proposition. With 256 layers of Damascus steel and a solid walnut handle this Damascus steel knife is as solid as Piccard’s submarine and will give you a lifetime of enjoyment.
Please note: Each knife is handmade from natural materials, there will be some variation in color, Damascus pattern and overall look. The knife you receive will have the same attention to quality and detail as the one pictured but may differ slightly in appearance.
