Description:
Merino wool is fast becoming the standard for a lightweight high performance base layer and the Core 4 Element merino zip T base layer shirt sets the standard for soft, warm and comfortable at a price that agrees with your wallet. No longer does a thermo-regulating base layer need to be super thick and bulky. Using 100% New Zealand Merino wool in the 190 gram weight (lightweight) it’s still surprisingly durable.
From sitting in a cold Wisconsin tree-stand to moving quickly along a Montana ridgeline in pursuit of a trophy elk, the natural wicking properties of the merino will keep you warm and dry. Plus the added length of the shirt ensures it won’t come untucked throughout your hunt as you bend, climb, stretch and crawl to get that perfect shot. A generous 9″ zipper for cooling off add to the features.
Built in conjunction with and tested by the Camofire.com crew, this base layer has been through the wringer from spot and stalk hunts, cold spring trail runs, summer scouting trips and winter tree stand hunts from Canada to Illinois. Inside and out it stands up and performs as any gear should.

The Core4Element.com website shows the crew and bottoms in small but not the 1/4 zip.

Mike, I believe its made in China. Unfortunately, thats where the majority of the technical hunting clothing lines come from.

Mike – Chris is correct. Most all of the Core4 gear is made in China/Vietnam. Of all the top brands in hunting gear – Sitka, Kuiu, Russell, Browning, First Lite, Core4, Kryptek…all made in China/Vietnam except Kuiu is sewn in Canada while the fabric is produced in Japan/Vietnam/China. The challenge now with any company making technical clothing, particularly camo, is that the camo printers who print to fabrics and those companies that make technical fabrics are for a large part located in Asia. American production of anything clothing with camo is a very big challenge right now.

The Chinese stiching on the Core4 garments leaves a lot to be desired. The merino wool fabric is also very thin and doesn’t hold up well to ‘normal’ use.

Dave – what have you seen happen? I’ve been using this top for over a year now, for skiing, climbing, running, hunting (archery in the mountains, treestand as well as waterfowl) and have yet to see a stitch come undone. I’ve used the bottoms as well with good results. I have seen 3-4 of the boxers/bottoms come back to us from customers that we’ve sent on to Core4 with some seams tearing out. Not bad after seeing over 1000 go out the door. But I’d be curious to hear your specific feedback to pass along. For comparison I’ve also been using Kuiu and First Lite merino pieces with same results for me as well as a heavier Ibex merino top for 3 years now.

Kendall,
I love the core4 boxer briefs but of the 4 pair I bought a few months ago, the stitching failed on two of them the first few washings. The pairs I had prior to that the merino wool material tore and got so thin in the seat that they looked like I sat on a hand grenade. This after normal wear and washings over the course of a couple of months.
I don’t have any Sitka undergarments other than some base layer pants and shirts which I have had ’0′ problems with, Not meaning to bash anyone or any product these are just my experiences.
Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Dave

Dave – great feedback. It’s good to hear this so we can pass along the word. I’ve heard they may be adding a hint of spandex to the bottoms and boxers to ensure a bit more longevity and durability. I’ll keep you posted.

Can’t recommend the Merino Wool Core 4. I bought the Core 4 Merino Wool shirts and boxers. Washed exactly per instructions and dried on low. Checked and double checked the washing instructions. After the first wash all four of the boxes showed shrinkage on only the right leg – that can’t be a coincidence. The shirt showed a definite “curl” in length also. Love the feel of the stuff and wearing them, but I’m scared to wash it now. I have never had an issue with my Sitka gear or other baselayer items from other manufacturers when washed and dried per instructions. The cost savings isn’t worth it if you can’t use them and they’re not durable. I am so disappointed in these I advised my son-in-law who hasn’t used his yet to sell them and buy something else instead. Too bad because the product itself is very nice, at least before you wash it.
